Charles in Cluj

Fellow Fulbrighter Charles Harris is based in Sibiu, a southern Transylvanian city known for its beauty and for its art museum. Charles is the senior Junior Fulbrighter in our 2008-2009 Romania cadre. He is from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, where he is doing his Ph.D. in political science. In Sibiu he is teaching and doing research at Lucian Blaga University.

At 8:53 this morning, an exhausted Charles arrived at the gara in Cluj. I met him there, learned that he had had no breakfast, and had been up since 3:30 A.M. The quickest treatments for his misery were a McDonald's stop and a long nap. Charles awoke about 1:00 to the smell of lunch, which was simmering in the kitchen. He seemed in much better condition, and had some soup, bread, and mici, small spicy sausages that are a Romanian specialty.

The rest of our day was spent with an unhurried car tour of Cluj and of theUBB Economics Faculty, after which we again repaired to the apartment for a beer and a TV movie. Neither of us was in the mood for a big effort today, and decided to rest up for a road trip on Sunday. Charles says that he hasn't yet seen Middle Earth here in Romania. Let's see if tomorrow he does so.
